About Yurt

The history of the yurt reaches back about 3000 years. The tribes living on Mongolian lands lead a nomad lifestyle, Witch lead to the need of a strong portable shelter, witch could be put up and taken down quickly, but at the same time would protect them from the elements. After many evolutions the yurt came to look like the ones we know today.

JurtaA yurt (ger) is a typical home for the Mongolian prairie man.

Before the rise of Genghis Khan empire yurts were small and humble. This changed during Mongolian conquests. Mongolian warriors received many riches, witch were either claimed in battle, or given to them from the tribesmen and villagers who were beaten in battle.

The owners of the Yurts became richer and began to decorate their homes with many different things.

The wood elements were decorated with paintings of plants and animals the door covers were also pained.

JurtaA yurt consists of a vertical wall in a cylindrical shape, built with a grid of light wood, and a cone roof.

In the center of the tent, is supported by two pillars, witch uphold a circular rim, Forming a hole at the top. This is used for ventilation and light. It is also used for the chimney from a stove.

The yurt skeleton is covered with a canvas, and some times with a insulating layer of felt. The cover layers are attached with rope.

The canvas can be lifted off the ground slightly, witch is use full during the summer when ventilation is needed.

The door of the yurt always faces the south.

The inside of the yurt is split into a few different sections, every place has it own purpose.

Opposite the door is the place of honor, on the left is the place from women and children and on the right the man. The center is always occupied by either a fire place or a wood burning stove.

No person may step on the threshold, which is a symbolic boundary between the homestead and the world of strangers. At the time of the Mongolian empire, for such an offense in a yurt a Khan could lose his life.

Today, this tradition has not changed stepping on the threshold is a bad omen.

To move around the yurt you must move in a clockwise direction from the door.

It is frowned upon to reject a offering of food, the person receiving the gift must at least try it.

It is polite to attempts to make conversation with the owners, even with a minimum of words. At the same time should avoid too long conversations in their own language, incomprehensible to the hosts.
